How We Calculate Feeding Amounts
Our calculator uses the veterinary standard Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula, then adjusts based on your pet's activity level and life stage:
- Puppies/Kittens: Need 2-3× adult calories for growth
- Active adults: Need more calories than couch potatoes
- Seniors: Often need fewer calories due to slower metabolism
- Overweight pets: May need 20-30% fewer calories
Note: This is an estimate based on average food (~350 cal/cup for dogs, ~250 cal/cup for cats). Check your specific food's calorie content and adjust accordingly. When in doubt, consult your vet.
