How We Calculate Pet Age
The old "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule is a myth. Dogs and cats age differently based on their size and species. Our calculator uses modern veterinary research:
- First year: Pets mature rapidly — a 1-year-old is roughly a teenager
- Second year: They reach full adulthood (about 24 in human years)
- After that: Each year adds 4-7 human years, depending on size
- Giant breeds age fastest (Great Danes, Mastiffs, etc.)
- Small breeds live longest (Chihuahuas, toy breeds, etc.)
